How to connect to Synology NAS by using PuTTY?

Connecting PuTTY to your Synology NAS via SSH allows you remote access and management. SSH is supported by Synology NAS devices for secure connection, allowing you to communicate with your NAS via a command-line interface.

This method enhances your NAS flexibility and accessibility, resulting in a smooth and secure user experience.

Download PuTTY:

Download PuTTY on your computer system from puttykeyinfo.com

Enable SSH on Synology:

Log in to your Synology DSM (DiskStation Manager).

Go to Control Panel > Terminal & SNMP > Enable SSH service. Check that the SSH server is enabled.

Determine the NAS IP Address:

Determine your Synology NAS IP address by go to DSM control panel.

Open PuTTY:

In PuTTY configuration windows, enter the username or IP address of the Synology NAS in the Host Name section.

Select the connection type to SSH and port to 22.

Saving Session:

If you want to connect to this Synology on a regular basis, you can save the session settings for future use. In the "Saved Sessions" section, enter your session name and click the "Save" button. To save the session.

Establish a connection:

To establish the connection, click the "Open" button.

For the first time you can the security alert dialog box, Click on Yes to continue.

Enter the username and password when prompted.

Make sure that your firewall enables SSH connections, and if that you're concerned about security, use SSH key authentication instead of a password.
